Here at the Orthopedic Institute at JFK Medical Center, we really have a comprehensive orthopedic program that's capable of handling most things, whether it be a simple injury on the tennis court or an endstage arthritic hip or even a hip or knee replacement that was done years ago that's ultimately failed. We can do complex spine surgeries; most things that you see, whether it be orthopedic related or sports related, can be managed here at JFK medical centers orthopedic institute. So after someone gets a hip or knee replacement the question always arises, "Where do you go? How long are you in the hospital?" Typically our patients are in the hospital for two nights. After that, I always recommend to go directly home if possible, you know, it's not always possible if they're someone who's very elderly or they don't have anyone around to take care of them or to watch after them. Then, sometimes people go to a rehab facility for a short time, but it's always nice to be able to return people to their own home where they're in a familiar environment and I feel that by getting-people getting back to their normal life as quick as possible is the best way to facilitate a good outcome.
So after hip or knee replacement, a lot of people nowadays can return to regular activities very quickly. The question I often get asked is, "How long am I gonna be incapacitated for?" And I always tell my patients, "You're not gonna be incapacitated, we're gonna have you up and walking the day of surgery and within a day or two, you'll be back to your own home." As far as getting back to work, it really depends on what you do. If you have a sedentary type job, sometimes people can start walk-uh working the same week that they had surgery. If they have a more physical job, it may be more like 4 or 6 weeks, but you're never incapacitated after these surgeries. We really do mobilize you, get you back to a normal life as quick as possible. As far as returning to activities, people can get back to all things after joint surgery; there's life after hip and knee replacement. That's the reason to get it, so we have patients who go back to golfing and go back to playing tennis and pretty much most things that they want to do. You have to realize that there are some limitations; you don't want to do high impact activities, like going out for 3 mile jogs, but we have patients who are police officers and firefighters and everyone and they have to get back to a high level of activity and they're able to do that.
